without shoes that is! I promised myself this year I would partake in the Tom’s Shoes call to go without shoes for a day. That is NOT easy her in MN since April 10th usually still means snow so this year I was determined since we’ve had better weather this winter than some of the southern states (YEAH!!). But little did I know the temp would drop and that day it would be a frigid 43 degrees. I did what I could and went the majority of the day without, despite the stares! It’s a good reminder that some people don’t ever have the luxury of shoes let alone designer ones!! I love Tom shoes for all of their work they do, helping others <3

One Amazing Woman…

I recently was approached to give some consulting on style character developement for a movie project. Can’t really give specifics but I immediately thought of Amelia Earhart. What an amazing person she was! I forget about how amazing until I do some research and realize just how much. I can’t imagine all the challenges she faced being a woman in a man’s field. But she stayed strong, followed her dreams and did it with style. Amelia this post’s for you!

After hearing all the buzz yesterday about the racist comments made by some fans of The Hunger Games, I felt the need to comment. I know I’m not the only one commenting but I just wanted to say what I wanted to say! I don’t feel the need to even respond about the comments made regarding the actress that played the part of Rue. They are just ignorant, narrow-minded and miss-informed! Seriously, if you can’t read a book completely and really absorb what the story and images that the author is trying to show you, then you are NOT a fan and not a great reader at all. Rue was supposed to have dark skin and eyes….enough said! So was Thresh so there is really no need to even dignify comments made by people that are so absorbed in their racist, shallow world that even when a description of someone is given to them on paper, they NEVER would expect strong and powerful or cute and innocent as being anything other than looking like themselves or their own family. Shame on you…and welcome to 2012. Wake up!

Now to the point I wanted to make. Yes, Susan Collins never mentioned the appearance of Cinna. I’m sure it was intentional. His appearance isn’t necessary as far as was he white, black or even blue or green (because there are really people that correctly can be referred to as ‘colored people’ in this story, they cut them from the movie ;o)) because he’s more of a presence. He’s calm, quiet but strong and has a quirky style. Now that in itself should make the decision an obvious one. Lenny is all of that!

Another thing that bothers me is their lack of understanding when it comes to casting. Being that I have worked behind the scenes on film projects for the last 5 years and have seen everything from casting, to camera work, to makeup and production design I know a little about what goes into it. Okay, I’m no professional but even though I am not a PAID stylist, I can tell you that when I do set or costume design for a movie I put everything I can into it. It’s about telling the story and really thinking about what your viewers EXPECT to see but also keeping in line with what the writer and director imagined in their mind. I can only imagine that sitting around and discussing casting, with a larger budget on their hands, they started really thinking about Cinna. He has style and charisma, he is strong but isn’t rebellious or too loud unless it fits the moment, he is attractive and his eyes speak to you, he can wear something weird and no one things anything strange about it. He has people who believe in him and follow his direction. If I was in the room, I would not have been surprised if someone blirted out, ‘Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could get Lenny to do it?’ Sure he fairly new to acting but he has been in bigger projects like Precious, but that should tell the misinformed fans that he was picked for a reason! When they thought of Cinna, they thought of Lenny! Lenny became Cinna to them and that should be enough for the fans to believe in him too.

So if the story tellers are the ones who originally thought up the idea or are bringing it to life in this case with Director Gary Ross, should it not be up to the reader/viewer to them see if for the story it was supposed to be? I think so!

Just a quick Google gave me this information!
Lenny Kravitz was recruited by director Gary Ross for the role of Cinna in the big screen adaptation of THE HUNGER GAMES starring Jennifer Lawrence. After Gary Ross saw him in Precious, he told CineMovie recently that he knew Lenny would be perfect for the role and called him while he was on tour to recruit him. Although he wasn’t familiar with the Suzanne Collins novels, he researched the books and immediately said yes to the project.

Even though I design bags, I come across certain designers that make me want to give in and buy a high end bag sometimes…enter Gryson!

Definitely worth saving up for!! The Turnstyle collection REALLY caught my attention and is exactly my style. It’s a mixture between color and neutral, classic and funky, new and vintage. I LOVE the turnstyle locks on each bag and the softness of their leather. Here are some of my favorites from all of the collections!

Here they are…the after pictures! It was TONS of work but we were all really happy about the final results! I think everyone’s favorite is the kitchen which is NOT allowed to be called a kitchen but instead Cocina Cafe!

No, I’m not featured on their site (wishful thinking) BUT I do prowl their site on a daily basis. I get inspiration for fashion, costume and set designs and above all else DECORATING!! I LOVE going there and sometimes think my friends and family must think I’m a little obsessed because I often find myself saying….’I found it on Apt. Therapy…’!

I definitely have found a new love of styling and interior design that sprouted up when I was going to school. I knew I loved decorating and always looked through magazines but until I really started exploring what I love to do in my spare time, I didn’t realize how close my relationships with fashion and interior design actually were!

I have been working with the 48 Hr Film Festival team that I met about 3 years ago for a while now and have done both set and costume design. I am currently working on a new film where I will be the sole costume designer which is SUPER exciting. But I still have that pull towards the interior world. Since my daughter just acquired her first apartment with her friend Anna in Chicago and will be moving in this weekend, I have a chance to decorate another home besides my own (pics coming soon) and get a little funky with it!

Here are the before pics of the apartment (or at least one that is similar)…

Pros:

Hardwood floors
Cute little faux fireplace
Good layout in Living Room
Lots of windows in bedrooms
little deck they share with the neighbors

Cons:

Hidious ceiling fan in living room
NO CLOSET SPACE
cannot paint cabinets in kitchen
the kitchen in general is pretty…scary!

We plan on getting pretty creative and I will be there for about 3 days to help them as much as possible. I am excited about it and can’t wait to try out my styling skills. We won’t have all the furniture yet…still looking for a couch, but I think we can make it cute anyway! Stay tuned~

Of Fashion & Fairytales….(part 2)

I also helped out with photography at ‘The Dance for Life’ fundraiser. This event was amazing! The location was at the top of the IDS building. I have to say I LOVED the combination of a fashion show and dancer performance. Of course, I thought the choreography was amazing and it was done by a former classmate John-Mark Hostetler. It was fun to see his work and what he is doing now! It was definitely a unique event that was fun to be a small part of!

Of Fashion & Fairytales…(part 1)

This spring I had a couple of opportunities to again volunteer with MNFashion for MN Fashion Week. It was a lot of fun and I met some awesome people.

Secrets Fashion Agency in Mpls. It was a fashion show that told the story of Alice in Wonderland from childhood to adulthood. The clothes were amazing and the atmosphere/venue was breathtaking. We had a lot of fun working this event.
